“For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea”. (Habakkuk 2:14)
Faith Works Language Initiative serves diverse minority communities across Nigeria. Currently, an estimated 150 minority communities in the country have no Scripture in their native languages and many more communities where illiteracy is widespread. For some of these communities, their remote geographical locations almost always mean the people face rampant socio-economic insecurity and often lack access to sustainable social development programs.
Although minority languages have long oral tradition, most lack consistent and established orthography. Even in areas that do have some written content, relatively high illiteracy rates prevent majority of the people from reading the published materials for themselves.
Rather than considering these challenges as insurmountable obstacles, we at Faith Works Language Initiative view them as opportunities to equip the local community through working creatively with mother tongue speakers to develop appropriate initiatives that open doors for the advancement of their people.
